Hsipaw or Thibaw, as it is called in Myanmar, is one of the oldest of the northern Shan cities and throughout history, the Sawbwa or Shan Chief of Hsipaw had close relations with the Myanmar Kings. It is located 200km northeast of Mandalay by car or by train and particularly considering the journey from Mandalay involves one of the world’s great train journeys cross famous Gokteik Viaduct which spans a 300-meter-deep gorge in the Shan mountains. The real highlights are boat trip along the Dutawaddy River, short walk into Shan villages passing amongst fields rich in crops and local fruits and Sunset Hill for the panoramic view of Hsipaw. The area can also be regarded as one of the most authentic hiking hotspots in Myanmar.
